Coping With Change

Most of my clients come to see me because they’re unhappy with some part of their lives. They may want to:

  • Stop smoking

  • Become more assertive

  • Sleep better

  • Worry less

On one level these all seem simple, right? I mean – just put down the cigarette, or speak up more, or close your eyes and drift off, or don’t-worry-be-happy. Unfortunately, it’s often not that easy.

Knowing what we want and getting what we want can be 2 completely different and frustrating things.

For instance – I’m trying to get rid of 7-8 extra pounds that I added back on from the 30ish pounds I lost last year. It sounds simple – after all, I lost quite a bit in the past. But easy it’s not. However, I’m hanging in there and am making slow progress.

Here are some tips for making change, if not easy, at least easier.

1 – Take small bites (yes, a reference to my weight loss efforts!). Often we try to change everything all at once – with less than successful efforts. For me it’s usually because I’m impatient (a shocker to anyone who knows me!) and want to get it all done.

If giving up smoking completely is too overwhelming, start with not smoking indoors. Once you’ve done that successfully for a few weeks, add a ban on smoking in your car. Keep easing into it rather than trying to jump in feet first.

2 – Find a good role model. If you want to run a marathon, start with a 5 or 10K first. AND find a fellow runner who has done these things and is willing to mentor you. It’s always helpful to have someone who will answer questions and give you the benefit of their experience.

3 – Set yourself up for success by making change easy. If you want to get in better shape and start working out regularly, pack a bag of workout clothes and leave it in your car. That makes it much easier to stop at the gym after work and exercise. If you go home first, you’re much less likely to leave again – the couch will call you!

4 - Ask for help. Many of us don't want to share our struggles because it's embarrassing and we don't want others to know that we're less than perfect. Big surprise - they already know! So reach out to your friends and family and let them know what you're trying to do. Granted, they won't all be helpful but many of them will.

Asking for help is NOT a sign of weakness but the mark of an intelligent, determined person. And remember that professionals can help as well. Hypnosis is an extremely effective way to make change happen - and the sessions can happen in person or over distance - phone or internet.

If you need help switching things up, contact me. I'd love to work with you and help you move toward the life you really want!
