One of the things I help anxious clients do is Cognitive Restructuring – changing the messages they’re giving themselves. Anxiety causes a lot of the following – what ifs, worry, expecting the worst, and general negativity.
The problem with thinking this way, is research shows that the messages we give ourselves on a regular basis are powerful. Our brain does 2 things with them. It starts to believe them and it makes them come true.
So, if you tell yourself constantly that you’re not very good at your job and you’re going to get fired any day, you start underperforming. And you may do it to the point that you’re let go.
If, on the other hand, you regularly tell yourself that you’re a great team player, you have really good ideas, and you’re a hard worker – that’s what starts to happen. And this one gets a much better outcome.
The point is that the messages we give ourselves are important. Maybe you need some help changing yours!
