Connections are Crucial!

One important element in dealing with anxiety is to rely on strong social support. And by that I mean relationships with friends and family. The article I’m summarizing points out that social support isn’t a one-way street. If you want to go to others for help and understanding, you need to be providing the same things to them.

I’ve been encouraging clients to strengthen relationships and lean on them for years. Research now shows that these relationships do matter. In fact, poor social support has been linked to depression and loneliness (which can trigger stress and anxiety), has been shown to alter brain function and can increase the risk of:

· Alcohol use

· Cardiovascular disease

· Depression

· Suicide
